100 Thousand Poets for Change

100 Thousand Poets for Change has organized over 5000 poetry, art, and music gatherings for the cause of Peace, Justice, and Sustainability across the globe in the last 10 years. Poets from many languages, cultures, geographical regions, ethnicities, creeds, beliefs, and religious affiliations have come together to lead and promote poetry readings, without any preconditions or censorship, where participants speak out for causes nearest their hearts. In the process, oppressions, exploitative practices, biases, and abuses of many kinds have been highlighted. There are distinct and often mortal consequences to regimes of tyranny and persecution; and there is a collective interest in striving toward the demanding ideal that 100 Thousand Poets for Change has set for itself in calling for Peace, Justice, Sustainability.

This year’s global event will take place the last weekend in September. This is an action time for poets. So far over 200 communities around the world have signed up for live and/or virtual events. Ron Kolm, Linda Kleinbub, and Phillip Giambri are honored to be hosting this year’s New York City event live at KGB Red Room on Friday September 24th from 7-9 PM and will be among the below list of readers. We look forward to sharing an important and wonderful night of poetry with you.

A record of this event will be preserved by Michael Rothenberg at Stanford University’s archives.

New Website!

I've spent the spring building a website for Spiral Thought because I'm restarting the whole project again with a heavier emphasis on electronic presentation. It's not 100% complete, but there's a lot of background available on previous incarnations and projects, and I will continue building as the new project(s) develop. You can find Paul van Linden Tol on Facebook. He also likes to tinker with carpentry projects, and built his own small wooden boat a few years ago. I made a short movie about the Voyage of the Book Turtle a few years ago; our son Max also appeared in it. The wooden boat has been repurposed as a pair of bookshelves in his apartment. If you want to see the movie, here's the link:

I’m starting a new project in 2019. It’s the Spiral Thought Podcast, presenting contemporary poetry, spoken word, and interviews on a variety of themes and topics. Anyone interested in participating can reach me at spiralthought@gmail.com. Put podcast in your subject line (because I also have a small literary magazine that I’m in the process of resurrecting); include a brief bio (and a picture, if you like). Now for the trickier part: you can also include audio files of you reading several poems or a short story aloud. You can record them into the voice memo feature of your cellphone, or use Sound Recorder in your computer (some of you may have better audio software than that). Attach these files to your email message as well. I’m working on the first episode now, and plan to post it in early to mid January, 2019, and I’ll be sending out announcements about where to find it as soon as it’s posted. Thanks!
Wishing you all happy holidays, and the best for the New Year!

An American Icon: Dave Amram at Theater for the New City, May 25, 2014

(Click on the title above to see a 25 minute performance.) A few years ago I was at one of TNC's community arts festivals, and Dave Amram was on the bill. I hadn't seen him perform in over a decade, and it was great to touch bases again. He has a copy of this as well, and I got an effusive thanks for passing it on. Crystal Fields' introduction says it all.

Part of the reason I'm sharing this is because I'd like to start doing more audio/visual work with the magazine and performances.  The video quality in this piece is not great, but the sound is pretty decent. This was shot on a little Sony Cybershot I've had for about 10 years. There are higher quality video settings on the camera, but the higher the image quality, the shorter the clips created. Now that I have a laptop, though, there are additional possibilities.

Issue 5

The last issue (#5) of the printed magazine was published in the winter of 1999. Here's a link to a very lightly revised pdf version: Issue 5.

It was a great issue, and I hope you like it - it's a good example of what we were doing almost 10 years ago.

Meanwhile, I'm continuing to tinker with the formatting for this blog; please be patient while it's under construction.
